Pakistan vows retaliation after India’s airstrikes

Pakistan says it downed 12 Indian drones after new “serious provocation”
• Pakistan says drones downed: Pakistan said it had downed 25 Indian loitering munition drones across the country. The drone launches, which its army described as a “serious provocation,” came a night after India’s strikes on Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
• Potential for wider conflict: Pakistan’s prime minister had already condemned India’s Wednesday strikes and vowed to retaliate. Its response to the military action may decide whether the rival neighbors are able to find an off-ramp or become locked in an escalating confrontation.

 • Deadly attacks: A Pakistani military official said at least 31 civilians were killed Wednesday in what India dubbed “Operation Sindoor,” which New Delhi said targeted “terrorist infrastructure.” On the Indian side of the de facto border that divides Kashmir, cross-border Pakistani shelling has killed at least 12 people, a senior Indian defense source said.
 • Tourist massacre: The escalation in conflict comes after militants killed more than two dozen civilians, mostly tourists, in Indian-controlled Kashmir last month. India accused Pakistan of being involved, which it denied.
